Interpretive Historical Signs for Union Street Bridge & Trestle

This sign, across from the parking lot at Union Street Entrance, has been placed at the same location as the historical photograph taken on the original Opening Day, 1913.

The sign on west side, nearest the trestle, depicts the history of that structure.

The second sign on west side, also on the former railway, shows the route west from the Salem RR Station on 12th Street, across bridge to Gerlinger and on to Dallas.

These three historical interpretive signs were designed and fabricated for "Friends of Two Bridges" by Ed Austin and are placed at our restored Union Street RR Bridge, now for pedestrians and bikers. Funds for these important educational elements were contributed by Ed Austin, Rachel Perez and Dave Glennie, Marylou and Lester Green, Virginia and Thomas Green, Jr., Lola and Christopher and Hackett, John S. Griffith, D.M.D., Suzanne and Bob Morrison, Diane and Michael T. McLaren and Larry Tokarski.

Very nice indeed! They're lovely! Thanks for the sneak preview. See you in the morning - which looks to be equally lovely!

Your comment is appreciated. This project was a community-based enterprise: both city staff and citizen volunteers gave this structure a new birth of usefulness and beauty. Now let's enjoy it!

Nice signs, and I love the bridge. Makes me long for an eastside walking/bike path between Riverfront Park and Keizer. We worked on that way back when but seems like some riverfront property owners weren't keen on the idea.

Also wondering if there are plans to put any benches on the bridge? Would love to take my mother-in-law for a stroll but would need somewhere to rest midway.

Virginia - Your photos are wonderful! We bought the Wiggins-Crawford house (1759 Court St. NE)from Mary Crawford in 1962. The description with the house says 1972. Mary W.
