SHINE is a look backward from the present to Salem's 1860 charter. In each year we have four sections: glimpses of what was happening around the world, a special event in Salem, what you see when you visit that site today, and other Salem events of interest that year.

We are in process of adding historical signs in our Salem Downtown Historic District. Here is an example of the ones you will find in Veracruz, Mexico. They are very proud of being the First City in America, being established by Cortez in 1519. Today it is a crossroads of Caribbean, European, African and Mexican cultures. On Sunday evenings, neighbors gather in the central plaza to watch couples of all ages dancing to waltzes and sambas.

February historic homes & buildings tours? When & where this month! Also, what kinds of things are being considered for these signs? Is there a list anywhere, and is there a public process for comment and sign proposals?

There are no scheduled historic Open House tours in Salem this month.

The local historic signage program is being processed through the Community Development Department. More information can be obtained from Kim Moreland (KMoreland@cityofsalem.net). Some input has recently been provided by the Historic Landmarks Commission.

Thanks!

Readers this week might be interested in this 1909 document, Proceedings of the fiftieth anniversary of the admission of the state of Oregon to the union. The "flip book" interface is pretty nifty.

Virginia, were you recently in Veracruz? Tell us about it.
